Progress linking HIV prevention and maternal health in Africa |
Tackling HIV & AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, which has the highest infection rate in the world, requires forging links with services that treat mothers.
The latest edition of Reproductive Health Matters features " HIV and Maternity Care Services in Sub-Saharan Africa", an article which explores progress in linking HIV prevention and maternity services in Sub-Saharan Africa. The article is drawn from two reviews funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) which outlined challenges in integrating the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV & AIDS and maternity services in Sub-Saharan Africa. It also highlights high level policy commitments and provides examples of successful programmes.
This article was co-written by Anne Nolan, Options' HIV & AIDS and Public Health Technical Lead. Anne, who is currently seconded to DFID as the Health Advisor for sexual and reproductive health and rights within the newly formed AIDS and Reproductive Health team in DFID's Policy and Research Division. At DFID, Anne is currently supporting the integration between the sexual and reproductive health and rights and the global AIDS policy agendas and is developing a comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights agenda for DFID. She will return to Options in July 2008.
