Our PATHS2 programme came to an end in September and we were awarded a Leadership Excellence Award for implementing strategic ground breaking and successful initiatives towards health systems reform in Nigeria.

In September, our DFID-funded PATHS2 programme in Nigeria came to end.

We have been working across the states of Enugu, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano and Lagos since 2008, strengthening state and local government health sector systems and improving the planning, financing and delivery of sustainable and replicable primary health care services.

We used both long and short route mechanisms to improve voice and accountability from community level up to local and state government. As a result of the programme;

  • We supported the setup of 3,946 Facility Health Committees
  • We built the capacity of civil society organisations so that they are now able to track government plans on health and hold them to account
  • We used community scorecards whicfh facilitate dialogue between health facilities and communities, bridging a common communication gap and resulting in improvements to the attitudes of staff and the facilities themselves
  • In Enugu we developed Client’s Rights posters that were put up at all PATHS2 supported facilities. They provide communities with information on their rights and what they can do if these are not met.

At the end-of-programme dissemination event, we handed the project over to the Ministry of Health in Abuja. The event was attended by a variety of key stakeholders including DFID Nigeria, NGOs, government and the media. The First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, was also in attendance. The work that PATHS2 has accomplished was praised by the attendees and the Ministry of Health pledged that they would carry on the key interventions. We received a Leadership Excellence Award from our lead partner Abt Associates, for implementing strategic ground breaking and successful initiatives towards health systems reform in Nigeria.
