In the first study of its kind in the UK, Options is currently conducting PEER (Participatory Ethnographic Evaluation and Research) with women from London’s Somali, Ethiopian and Sudanese communities in a piece of work commissioned by FORWARD, a campaign and support organisation promoting African women’s rights and reproductive and sexual health. Under investigation are attitudes towards female genital mutilation and identity, and how women from these communities perceive health services in the UK. Results will inform a new national strategy on female genital mutilation and related support services for women and girls affected by female genital mutilation.
